I ordered a Symbol 8800 with Windows 2003 CE. They shipped me the Symbol with Windows CE 4.1. This is not the same...is it? I have the Windows 2003 CE operating system file on my desktop....is there anyway to reprogram the Symbol operating system? Any help would be great
Thanks
Jeff

Well my machine has Windows Mobile 2003 first edition and the 'about' box says that it's Pocket PC version 4.20.1081. Microsoft keeps changing how they refer to the OS - I think "Windows CE" refers to the core OS that's used in all embedded devices and "Windows Mobile" refers to the particular flavour that's used in PDAs and smart phones.

To upgrade a device you need a ROM update image for that specific device. For instance, if you have a Symbol 8800, you'll need an image from Symbol specifically for the 8800. One for a different model won't work.

There should be instructions with it for how you carry out the upgrade: on my Viewsonic I had to connect the device and run an update program on my PC.

Thanks.....it seems pretty darn confusing. And of course the Windows Mobile 2003 version i have is for the 8846...so i guess that won't work.

No, it's not just a case of copying over the files. You have to overwrite its ROM, which is a major event. If you mess it up you have a very expensive lump of useless plastic!
