Hello:

My friend and I have been debated recently on what language Windows was programmed in? It doesn't matter which version, well I would think that anything about Windows 95 was programmed in the same language.

Also, does anyone know how many lines of code Windows 2000 is. I have heard 63 million. Is this accurate?

Thanks,

Windows was programed in many languages, some ASM, some C, Some C++ , Some VB, Some others, it all depends on the componet, if you are talking about the core of the OS (such as the virtual machine that the windows interface runs on top of ) it would more than likely be any of the low level native languages (ASM/C/C++)

Lines of code doesnt matter, and you can only know for sure unless you actually hear microsoft say that, again that varies "What Part of Windows are you talking about"

it would have been cool if windows was written completely in ASM, then it would be real fast, but because of slight hardware differences, different chip instructions, the Windows VM is written possible in ASM/C++ , which emulates a Windows based platform, then windows is created in any language desired with any number of componets, so windows is actually emulated on top of a virtual machine, so that any changes in drivers, can just be pluged into the VM, without having to change the code of windows itself.

Just keep in mind, if it's an OS as commercial as window, chances are it was written in almost every programming language availible for the different tasks.

Ahhh..

Thanks for that. Well I guess my friend and I were both right. I said ASM and some C. He said VC++.

Thanks for that though.
