What are you going to do with it? Any specific applications software that will lock you into a product?
Later versions take more space and are more complicated.
For educational purposes I'd stay with 3.2v4.2 as it will load off floppies. If you have a cdrom that is recognized by SCO you could consider open server. Possibly 5.0.2 or 5.0.4. Both available reasonably on e-bay.
But be aware that the product may not load on your hardware. Ed Fair

it is always a good idea to check the SCO home page
and look at their "Compatible Hardware" section...it normally has pretty good info on hardware they have tested on before
generally any version of sco will work on a laptop as long as you have installation media for it (ie, floppies{yelch} or cdrom or tape.) The main problem that sco has with laptops is talking to pcmcia devices. some network card manufacturers claim to have drivers that will work but i have yet to get it functioning (yes even 3com). character based operations work just fine with any version, however scologin/open desktop can be a pain on some displays.
again it matters as to what you want to do with the laptop.
I have been running OS 5.0.5 in a 5Gb partition on a Umax850t (12Gb drive - the rest Win98SE) for some time, mainly character based packages although I have no problem in running X Windows (the Umax has 8M ATA graphics and 1024x768 resolution). However, as unix42 says networking is a different matter. According to SCO there is no 100M pc card that will run with OS 5.x although the Linksys pc100 will run with Unixware 7. I have failed to find any third party drivers for the Linksys for OS5.x but can communicate via ftp.
Regarding a source for the os, SCO used to offer OS5.x for "free" for private use, including the development system. Several years ago this worked out at $20 for media (CD) and p&p. I imagine they still do this, you have to register and then get the licence info.
