I have read conflicting information on this, one book claims the client can be installed if the SMSSERVICE account has local admin rights (to enable connect to C$), however I have also read that the account to use is SMSClient_"Site Name" and even SMSCliToknAcct&.

Any ideas ?

As I understand it, it's SMSCliToknAcct& - this installs the core components (Boot32wn.exe is the actual install) - then the other components (HW inv, SW inv, etc are actually "deployed" to the client as an advert, if you will, and handled by the APM.

HOWEVER - it does depend on the OS as to the particulars, b/c services don't run on 9x, etc, etc.

Unless your boss wants to know, I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it - if it works, you've installed the client - just let it do its thing.
