What updates an i-node?

Question. How does an i-node get updated when the file does not?

ls -l /usr/sbin/ntpdate
Mar 12 2003

ls -lt /usr/sbin/ntpdate
Mar 12 2003

ls -lut /usr/sbin/ntpdate
Apr 07 11:55

ls -lc /usr/sbin/ntpdate
Apr 06 19:51

istat /usr/sbin/ntpdate
Last updated: Tue Apr 06 19:51:04 2004
Last modified: Wed Mar 12 06:14:20 2003
Last accessed: Wed Apr 07 11:55:14 2004

Changing permissions or ownership of the file would do it.
