greetings,

i have multiple 3com switches that for some reason or so have gone brain dead and won't boot.

I have:
1100
3300
3300sm
4400

and a bunch of 3900's

At one time I remember there was a old DOS serial utility available that would allow me to update the ROM or Flash the boot file. Now sure i can't remember how I did it. I know I can use the new serial upate that they to upload latest firmware similar to the TFTP upload, but I'm not sure if that is what i need.

IF anyone has any insight. The conditions seem pretty similar.
ALL lights on, nobody home, no prompt at terminal.

TIA

If your 1100 and 3300 switches "try" to boot up but can't
find Opcode, then you "might" be able to get them going by
downloading the 3Com Serial Update utility, and then use
it to upload the latest code to the switch.

The latest code is v2.69 in a file named S2S02_69.exe

Once you download the Serial update utility, you can unzip
it to a directory (c:\3com\serial\ ) for example.
After you unzip the kit, you need to run the SETUP.EXE
to tell the software the location of your v2.69 software.

Then connect a Null-modem cable from the Com1 port on your
PC to the console port of the 3Com switch, do not power up
the switch yet.

Double click on SERIAL.EXE to start the update utility.
Follow the instructions on the screen of the PC. You will
be told when to power on the 3Com switch. You only have a
few seconds to do this, so be ready with the power cord.

The update utility will "sense" the switch being powered on
and begin to first download a *.LDR file, then the v2.69
software. When it is finished, unplug the 3Com switch, the
power it back on. With luck, you should get a blank screen
after about 20 seconds. Hit the Enter key a few times to
get the login prompt.

Good luck.
