I had to initialize my database because of massive corruption. I then ran a full back up and then the next day I ran a differential back up. My question is which tape(s) do I merge and why is it important to merge the tapes if there are no CAT files in the Temp folder?

You can always Recover the Database. Utilities/Recover.
