...if on mac cinema 4d R11, it's easy to use interface and rendering is fantastic:

...if on window, 3DS Max 2010 is the major player, you can fine a full list of the major software titles here, some are more specific to character building as opposed to architectural rendering:

i use xara 3d to create my stuff, even illustrator will do the job
