What should I use to build my website?

I just got a host and I'm looking into building my own site which now seems harder than I thought. I want to Macromedia to design the site from scratch. Someone told me to use Flash to design it but when I look at Flash it seems as if Fireworks is more of a website tool. Which one should I use? And which one is easier to master? Do you know of any books I can buy that take you through building a website step by step? I would like to incorporate a flash intro and rollovers, etc. I also will be streaming video. What do I do?
