Hi,
I recently found out that there is a possiblity that due to budgeting errors, my position as a government contractor may be removed. My coworker (who is my government boss and has alot of pull in his position) has said that he will do all that he can to maintain my position or possibly get me a job with the government (which would be great). At this point loosing my job is just a possiblity but I have a family and cannot afford to be out of a job.

After hearing the news I posted my resume on Monster and Hot Jobs to get a feel for the job market which is not good. I received a reply from a prospective employer. Here are the pros and cons of the job...
The Pros: The job pays about what I am making now (maybe a little less); I would work a 4 day work week;
The Cons: The hours are from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. (I begin school in January. I am taking a night class which would interfere with this schedule); There is chance that if by taking this job I could loose out on a chance to get a great position in the government.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Should I jump at the first opportunity and risk loosing an opportunity for a great position with the government?

Hi,

I think the key word in your post is 'possibility'. How possible is it that you are likely to lose your current position? You really need to consider the probabilities rather than the possibilities, like what is the probability of your current boss pulling some weight to get you a position? It sounds like you have a good working relationship and obviously if he is willing to go the whole nine yards then in my opinion it would be worth sticking where you are. The other position doesn't seem to me to be ideal for a family man - I know I'd miss putting my kids to bed at night if I worked those kinds of hours.

This probably doesn't help much, but I feel for you in your predicament and hope that whatever transpires is to your benefit. Have a great Christmas and all the best for 2003.

Thanks for the advice and I totally agree that the position that I was offered would not be ideal for a family man. I think I am just going to stick it out and hope that things work out for the better. Thanks again.

Don't leave your current position for this job you've seen posted... remember if the worst comes to the worst there will probably be other jobs with more suitable hours for you. There's not many people recruiting right now, its too close to Christmas.
