I have seen people disable every line in MSCONFIG startup programs except a few in order to get the windows to run faster. I was wondering which startup programs are required for windows ME to run. I believe the only one is systray but i cannot remember. Will this help free up system resources in windows. I have a Intel Celeron 766 MHZ with 256 MB of memory and would also like to know how to free up as much system resources as possible. I normally chill around 60% system resources but for some reason when i open programs while playing music it will temporarily (just for a second) slow the music a little. Would increasing sys resources help resolve this problem. Even on Napster when i search for a song while playing music it will pause the music for a sec when it pulls up the found results. (Only when using Napster Player works fine when using winamp for playing Napster MP3s) Please help! :)

i think its more a restriction of your celeron processor, its lack of on die cache causes this 'judder'. if you can afford it change your processor If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out

No, it's not a restriction of the processor. A 766 will handle streaming stuff with no problem. Heck, even a 300a will handle that with no problem.
It's more likely a motherboard chipset or sound card issue.
Freeing up resources may help, but I would check for updated motherboard/sound card drivers. Onboard sound is particularily bad at streaming (depending on chipset).
My Celeron II (600@950) has no problems at all, so I don't buy the "lack of on die cache" line. X-) Cheers,

You need EXPLORER but nothing else to use your PC. Everything else can be stopped with MSCONFIG. I did that in order to eliminate some BSOD and .vxd problems that I was having. I also killed Power Management and ran a batch VXD 'fix', and stopped my Virus Checker (Macafee). Overkill perhaps but I no longer have the problems. Well, I have had a couple of problems lately with .VXD but my granddaughter's Phonics game also included IBM's VIAVOICE and I haven't been able to spend anytime looking at the problem.
