I want to put together the fastest (and most stable) Foxpro machine I can for some tough disk intensive number crunching. Does anybody have tips as to what will help?
Specifically I'm not sure whether Pentium 4 or Athlon chips will be faster. Also, I'm also considering RAID, anybody know what kind of performance gains I can expect from that? Also, I know SCSI is best, been avoiding it because of noise (in home office). I use 2.6(more) and VFP6.

Thanks for your input

Hi my friend,
If you can afford it, bay the most recent technology in the market as you want, sure this will make your computer faster to run any application not just VFP.
BUT BE AWARE THAT 2.6 IS RUNNING SLOWER IN THE FAST COMPUTERS !!!!!!!!!!

I have tested Athlon 1GHZ and P-III 1 Ghz with identical dta and hardware settings. Obviously, Athlon comes first.
In a home office situation, I presume a single user or at the maximum one or two nodes.

But there are other issues as walid pointed out. It is not only VFP or FoxPro. A little performance tuning, 2.6 also runs fast in faster machines. (One important point is to avoid using harddisk as ram - Windows does it with a performance degrade).

So the decision shall be based on other software compatibility issues. I dont mean to say that Athlon is not compatible or PIII is always compatible with everthing. Both has exceptions and behave differently to speed with different software.

Just for a single user Foxpro or VFP software, my marks go with Athlon, and a good amount of RAM invested will give you good rewards.
