Hello!

I have used SCO UNIX and MS Windows for all my PHP projects thus far.

I am about to start a project where LINUX is the OS of choice and I wonder which would be the best flavor for a LAMP environment ??? !!!

This box, aside from being a LAMP server I will need to mount file systems between it and a SCO UNIX box. Other than that, I do not expect carry any other load.

Your advise will be appreciated!

NOTE: I ask this question here mostly because I am relating the LINUX server to LAMP not to the OS itself. I want to know from your experience, which flavor has proven friendlier and more stable as web server running Apache + PHP + MySQL.

Thanks,

I think it will not make that much difference. There is one thing I like about the way Ubuntu (and probably Debian) organized the settings: You can put your custom settings into a a file in a subdirectory and have it included. This way, if you put your settings in your own settings file, upgrades are usually automatic. This is done for both MySQL and PHP.

In fact, this settings organisation is a feature of both PHP and MySQL themselves. But not every distro has it enabled by default.

I second the previous poster's recommendation. However, which one is really based on your own personal preferences. Many of the distros provide the ability to boot from CDROM and play with the release without actually installing it. You might want to obtain or download some of these distros and try some.

I've worked with RedHat, WhiteBox, SuSE, Xandros and Ubuntu and my personal favorite for a server box is Ubuntu Server but installed with LAMPP for web services. Remember, though, that this does NOT have a graphical interface (you can use Kubuntu Desktop if you desire a GUI).

Good luck.
