I'm based in the Uk and am going on the CCNA course... I was wondering what kit I should get to set-up a home network. I'm thinking 3 routers and 3 switches but what models should I get (off e-bay) or should I just stick with packet tracer?
Packet Tracer and other sims are great, but ...... in the real world, you do not work on sims!!!! Just racking the equipment and connecting the cables and getting it all to work is EXPERIENCE!!!
I love end to end networking, having a PC on a switch on a router talk to another PC connected to another switch accross several routers!!! Helps to make it all make sense!
Ebay is as good a place as any as long as you take your time and read between the lines!!!!! If it is too good to be true ....... walk away!
Read the series by Wedell Odom CCIE on setting up a CCNA lab - he discusses EVERYTHING -
Also look back here - it has been discussed in much detail and then ask questions!
Several places sell labs or kits already together - just look at what parts are being used and read the Odom series, it discusses cost as well as different models!
I bought 3 routers - 2610, and 2x 2503s. They cost bugger all. However, I ended up doing most of my CCNA / CCNP labs on GNS3 / dynamips because of convenience. It beats any 'sim' hands down because it's emulated IOS - the real deal.
