I have a problem...
I'm formatting my old server, and i'm not sure which RAID to choose.
I have 3 Disks IBM 8GB and one IBM 18GB
They are on my controller ULTRA16O Adaptec.

I'm not sure how to make an ARRAY if my disks aren't all the same, what should i do with my 18gb HD???
what do you guyz think??? If you can't convince'em confuse'em

You can't make a RAID array that includes the 18GB disk. You need to make the array with the 8GB drives only.

Bill.

Depending on what the RAID controller's capabilities are, you might be able to make the 18gb part of the array, but more than likely it will be reduced to the capacity of the smallest drive in the array (8gb), so 10gb would be wasted.

But this might not be a problem for you if you got the drive as surplus or something.

Something you *might* want to look at though, is what level of SCSI is supported by the drives. A SCSI bus runs at the lowest common denominator, so if one of the drives is only SCSI-II (and all the other drives are Ultra 160), then SCSI-II is all you're going to get out of the array.
