X-windows is the gui stuff for Unix flavors, contains all the code for interactions with the Windows style interface.
GNOME is one of several desktops for your system. KDE is another.
GNOME and KDE are window managers, in addition to these there are twm, icewm, enlightment, sawfish, fwm and a host of others.
KDE is probably included with Mandrake...
1.) If you have a graphical log in look under "session" and see if you can select it automagically.
2.) Try to run locate kdm -- if found, press Ctrl-alt-F1 (assuming your in GNOME) andtype killall xdm log in as root at the console, then run the program kdm... If this fails you can get back to GNOME by typing startx
3.) If KDE isn't on your system, you can find it for free in many forms on the web. Their offical homepage is kde.org
