what is XML? 1

I have been asked to learn InfoPath in the new microsoft office 2k3 suite and we would like to have the users using electronic signature when they use the form. From reading different writing on Infopath and going to microsoft website, they all say I have to use XML for it. I have no idea what XML is really. So my question is what is XML? do you guys know of any website where I could learn in detail about it? what does one use it for?
