In Enterprise Manager, Security, Linked Servers:
Add a new one:
Name: BIG2 (different host on same LAN)
Product name: OLE DB Provider for Jet
Data Source: D:\SALES\PRIVATE\EMMS.MDB
Provider string: Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0

I then get icons for tables and views. Double-click 'tables' Errors out with Error 7399 and the OLE DB error trace says that IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005:

I have obviously missed out an important step. Anyone able to give me a clue? All help welcome.

Hmm...

This might not be much help, but that error number looks very familiar. I ran into it in a very different context, which had to do with using the ms remote provider without a proper mdac handler.

Anyway, I found my answers by googling 80004005. Perhaps you can do the same.

Good luck,

Bob

The error 7399 relates to Access Security. You need to identify the worgroup information file, and the access login credentials. I suspect you can do it by supplying the correct provider string, but I could never get this to work. So based on what I found in BOL and a bit of trial and error -

Allow access by all sql logins. (You can use a specific account instead of null)

sp_addlinkedsrvlogin BIG2, 'false', null,'accessuserid', 'accesspassword'

Use the Registry Editor to change this key to point to the full path/name of the Workgroup Information file used by Access
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\SystemDB

Also leave the provider string empty.

Maybe something in this that helps you.
