Basically VB.net is VB 7. Just like win NT4 became Win 2000 instead of NT5.
Microsoft is pusing the web angle and therefore the '.net'. Basically it is designed to more easily integrate with the web and create web based applications. Getting away from the windows platform and going to what Microsoft calls thier '.net' platform.
