Can anybody provide information on what VAPA stands for and how it is used in conjunction with IP voice connections?

It stands for Value-added Proprietary Add-ons. This is what the vendor adds to H.323 basic call if not using H.450 for supplementary services. VAPA allows to support features like auutomatic callbacks, etc...

For the MD110 this would be the "Ericsson proprietary protocol", which is mentioned in ALEX.
(Look in the Glossary under the IP extension description.)

This protocol gives you more than just simple call-control for your IP-extensions, like call back or other PBX-specific features.
