I am looking into the budget we would like to have for next year and when I saw the current prices for LTO2, LTO3 and 9940B I started to think a little what drive standard would be the best for us.
Basicly I ended up with that the best thing for us is to keep on using 9940B FC, but I would like to know what you think about it.
Some of the things I have been thinking about recarding tapedrives are:
Pros 9940B (mostly also true for 9840C)
- Rock solid
- Stable
- Can take the beating of almost 24 hours use per day for years
- Very low write error rate (almost none)
- Very low read error rate (haven't had a tape in 5 years we couldn't read
- Robust media
- Simple media
- Media cost
- Native FC interface (no SCSI to FC conversion)
- We can feed the drives to keep them running at full speed
- Use of automatic cleaning has worked since day 1
- Good hardware compression
Neutral:
- Maintenance cost = LTO
- NBU cost = LTO
- Performance ok
- Capacity ok
- Mount time ok (shit compared to 9840C but we don't need that speed)
Cons 9940B
- Cost per drive
- (haven't found anything)
Pros LTO2
- Standard
- Cost per drive is faily low
Neutral:
- Maintenance cost = 9940B
- NBU cost = 9940B
- Performance ok
- Capacity ok
- Mount time ok (shit compared to 9840C but we don't need that speed)
Cons LTO2
- Not very robust media (don't drop in on your floor)
- Drives can't take a daily use of 16-24 hours a day for long (compared to 9940B and other high end drives)
- SCSI to FC conversion.
LTO3 (don't know that much about them)
Cons.
- Great performance (if you can feed them)
- Great capacity
- Standard
- Cost per drive is faily low
Neutral:
- Maintenance cost = 9940B
- NBU cost = 9940B
- Performance ok
- Capacity ok
- Mount time ok (shit compared to 9840C but we don't need that speed)
Cons LTO3
- Not very robust media (don't drop in on your floor)
- Drives can't take a daily use of 16-24 hours a day for long (compared to 9940B and other high end drives)
- SCSI to FC conversion.
All feedback is welcome.
