What is the PROCESSOR BOARD ID used for?

Just learning, and I can't find anything that says what this is for. Here is an example:

Cisco 2522 (68030) processor (revision M) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 06043209, with hardware revision 00000003 [sig][/sig]
