What is the preferred text editor for developers?

I have been using text edit because it comes with Macs but I have had some problems with saving the wrong format. I have heard all about BBEdit and it looks great. I am just getting into not using WYSIWYG programs and wonder if a beginner like me needs something like this yet. I am a teacher and qualify for their educator discount so it is only $50. Is there a free alternative I can download?

For Macs, use "TextWrangler". It's by the same people that write BBEdit, but totally free.

Unless you use some of the advanced features, TextWrangler is free and does most things you'll ever need.

I use dreamweaver as a code editor. their WYSIWYG isn't bad, but as with any wysiwig editor it's rather restrictive... but their code editor is pretty damned fine. Makes CSS markup a breeze.
