I have been using text edit because it comes with Macs but I have had some problems with saving the wrong format. I have heard all about BBEdit and it looks great. I am just getting into not using WYSIWYG programs and wonder if a beginner like me needs something like this yet. I am a teacher and qualify for their educator discount so it is only $50. Is there a free alternative I can download?

Dr Java
TextPad -not free, just popup once a while everytime you save
Notepad :)

Thanks for all the replies. It was very helpful. I chose BBEdit because it seemed so easy and perfect for what I want it for.

I use dreamweaver as a code editor. their WYSIWYG isn't bad, but as with any wysiwig editor it's rather restrictive... but their code editor is pretty damned fine. Makes CSS markup a breeze.
