What is the maximum number of NICs that can be teamed?

What is the maximum number of NICs that can be teamed on Windows Server 2008 R2? Should we consider the switch limitation for LACP like most of the HP Procurve switches that only support 4?

It also depends on what application will be using them, as some either don't support it, or require specific configurations (like failover instead of load balancing). That can dictate how many should be used.
