I have had to replace a dead drive of 4 GB with one of 10. There is a 'Disk Error 0' error message and 2 short beeps on startup.

Usual CMOS utilities need to be loaded on the HDD for these old Compaqs so I cant tell if it is being detected properly. Does anyone happen to know if 10 GB is too large? Thanks.

If a BIOS will see a 4GB it usually will see up to 8.4GB but may not see larger without a BIOS update.

Put a FAT16 partition of 8 MB on it using FDISk in another machine. BIOS now recognises the drive as 8 GB on startup.

Error message is still appearing. The Compaq diagnostics have been run on the drive and it passes. Cant access it through MSDOS though. An ideas? Thanks.

Actually, FAT16 partitions have a size limit of 2GB. Are you sure you didn't format it in FAT32?

Older chipsets for the original Pentium have issues recognizing HD larger than 7.8GB. Read this MS article (scroll down to the NOTE: section):

Be sure the HDD is jumpered correctly as Select (or as the orginal HDD was jumpered. Compaq's are usually jumpered as Select but check the back of the original drive for the jumper placement. If it had a 4Gb HDD in it a 10 Gb will usually be 'seen'. Email Compaq technical support with the Model and Serial number for more information. Emachines, Celeron 600, 256 Mb RAM, 10 Gb HDD, ADSL.
