I have a customer who inherited a Norstar and it's phones. They have decided to buy a BCM 200 and keep the old 7310/7208's. I have heard that there is a limit to how old a phone can be before the BCM wont support it. What is that cut-off point? This Norstar was installed with MICS 1.0 software..lets call it 8-10 years old.

I've never had one that wouldn't work however if any of the 7310's have a BLF then the set version must be rel.16 or higher. this is true for BCM and Norstar upgrades to 6.1 and higher. the symptoms of this are that the BLF will work for a minute or two then just blink on and off for an hour or so then work for a while then blink again. the BLF's are fine it's version of 7310 that must be changed.

For all practical purposes, the BCM is built around the MICS telephony components with additional IP and networking features. I'm confident that if it will work with the latest release of MICS software, It will work with the BCM though we don't have any active BCMs with old digital sets. I think there is a software cutoff point on the older IP sets without upgrading the firmware of the set but I don't recall what that is. I'll be putting my confidence to the test shortly because we'll be installing a 3.7 BCM 400 around older digital sets.
You could call 800-4nortel, express routing code 338 to verify.
We have a customer that has a 6.1 MICS, and has some 15 year old 7208s and 7310. I ran across the BSF problem there but everything else works fine, including the 7324s and CAPs.

I have had older 7310 and 7208 sets that have low volume and distortion issues. Sorry not to have the exact level but the problem does exist. If they will run on MICS 6.1 they will run on BCM.

One other thing to keep in mind regarding the 7310 phones - you'll lose the "Use Set Volume" feature on a 7310 phone that is lower than release 13 (I think it was 13, or maybe it was 16 like the BLF feature). Regardless of the way the system is set, the phone will revert to the default volume after each call. The feature worked in 2.03, but was removed in 2.5, for whatever reason....

biv343: Thanks! that's interesting info, I didn't know that...
