Hi,
I have a user who needs access to a folder which is nested three layers down off of the root of the drive. He does not need access to anything else but that folder.

Do I allow traverse folder permissions at the first layer then allow full access to that particular folder which is nested two more layers down?

If I do that he can see all the folders on the way down but he cannot see any of the files. Is this the proper way of assigning permissions?

Anyone have a thought on the matter?

Just share that folder and map him to it.
Assign any permissions you want on it for him.
After you map a drive to that folder he will just see that folder in my computer.
