My friend who had a WinModem(getting rid of it soon) would like to know whats the best recomended modem to use with linux(he has Mandrake 7.1 that I burned him) that he can use with KPPP without a problem (I am thinking more along the lines of a modem that can have jumpers to set it right at a Com1 or Com2) any sugestions?
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
I have read a lot of posts about linux and modems, generally external are the way to go. As for brands, you can't go wrong with USR sportster series (even the internal ones).

Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

you know of any models that's 50$ or less, he doesnt want to pay more than 50$
Karl
kb244@kb244.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
If he wants a new modem, pretty much any brand name external will be expensive (you get what you pay for, in this case less headaches). You could probably pick up a used modem from ebay or something like that. If you get the chance, try it out before you buy it. I would stick with a modem that is on the supported hardware list <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> if you buy a good modem it will stay with you for a long time. I have a practical peripheral 14.4 external (6 years)and am using it for fun on my mandrake box. Good thing I didn't chuck the obsolete technology ;)

The only reason that I would recomend an external is because it is a snap to configure and get working in linux. An internal modem may go in like a charm, or it may be a spawn of the devil. But they are considerably cheaper. You can pick them up at auction sites.

Good luck....
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

That URL you mentioned doesnt show modems it just says "most modems other than WinModems are supported..."

Karl
kb244@kb244.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
 I have always used USR (aka 3Com) with flawless
results.I am now using an USR 56k external which
also works flawlessly in Win95. Connects every time at around 50K.
 However, using the very same modem with Mandrake 7.1
via pppd I get mixed results. I can sometimes go for days
and connect with no problem, then without changing any of
my scripts, I am able to connect but never authenticate at
the ISP side.
 I have NEVER been able to setup KPPP to work.
The modem passes all queries but never initializes.
 So here I am with one of the most recognized modems
in the world knocking my head against the wall trying
to get on the internet with Linux. Go figure.
 BTW if anyone has a fix for me by all means jump in here!

I have been in the digital electronic field since 1981,
I am using a DynaLink Internal PCI (1456VQH-T2) based on the Lucent chipset (which I picked up here in NZ for NZ$105)...

This is reported in Win98 as a Lucent Win Modem, and works perfectly, always connecting between 48000 - 53000 bps (the stats ay)...

With Linux, there was a driver available at the DynaLink web site, and I have not had a problem with this ever since I have installed it... I get similar connection speeds with Linux... (Netscape on both OSes reports getting information at 5.0 - 6.0 KB/s)

Hope this was of some help...

AV

PS.
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> reports NZ$1.00 = US$0.4545, which should put the modem (if it is available out your way) at about US$47.72

I installed internal USR 28.8K that I had in my P133 (linux is on a 486) and it installed smoothly with Yast. I am new to linux, so no gems of wisdom - but it works! [sig][/sig]
