in my case I ordered a type 2 E&M circuit, 4 wire, is this going to a surface mount 8 wire Jack ? if there are a physical thing what does it look like ? as I can't seem to find much in the way of referances to it,
thanks in advance,

It depends.....

If the LEC has copper facilities into the office, your T1 circuit could terminate on some sort of a pair-gain "smart jack" device. The device is usually rectangular, free-standing and sometimes has visible status LEDs.

If the LEC delivers the circuit into the office via fiber, it might terminate onto either a stand-alone jack or a multi-mount "66 type" block with 8P8C jacks on the sides.

Either way, the LEC will label whatever device is used for easy identification.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

A type 2 E&M circuit is analog (not T1). I've seen a standard jack for E&M - always had to cross-connect. Hopefully your equipment mfr will give you specs as to what pin does which. The leads will be Tip, Ring, Ear, Mouth, Signal Ground & Signal Battery. If memory serves (it has been a few years), Tip and ring are straight thru, Ear on one end goes to Mouth on other end. SG on one end goes to SB on the other end.
Good luck!

The piece of hardware that the Telco would be installing to terminate your two 4-wire E/M Type 2 tie lines for the RJ2HX wiring arrangement, is a 700A type jack. That jack consists of a 66M150 block, with an Amphenol or Cinch female standard 50 pin miniature ribbon connector mounted and wired to the block. With the RJ2HX wiring arrangement, the jack will accommodate 1 - 6 circuits. the lead designations are:
T/R TX
T1/R1 RX
E
M
SG (EG)
SB (MB)

The Telco would most likely provision such ckts on copper facilities. These would arrive as a 4-wire ckt that would terminate on a prem-pack or equivalent mounting. It would be equipped with modules that are connected to the 700A jack as RJ2HX. Each module has the job of providing the proper audio levels and converting the DX signaling to E/M Type 2 signaling. One example of such a module is the Tellabs 6043 type.

If you need more detail, you can Google: RJ2HX and get lots of hits with varying levels of info.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the insight everyone, the LEC would be bringing the line in with copper the simplest thing would be if there was a smart jack on the side then I could just use a patch cord going over to my equipment, otherwise I will just run a standard 4 pair cable over to it

The term "smart jack" does not apply to analog circuits of any kind. It is used in reference to a DS1 NIU for DS1 service only!

There is not a standard wiring arrangement for terminating your tie lines on Modular 8-position jacks. Depending on the Telco installer you might discuss one with him and agree on wiring that can be used for your two circuits, if you would rather use patch cords than cross-connects, or you could design one yourself and install them to suit your needs.

After the DEMARC you can essentially make your wiring arrangement anyway you want as long as it is done in a neat and workman-like manner and does not violate any codes or interfere with any other service.
