I stumbled across a phone with a mislabeled button the other day. User was trying to do Caller ID Inspect, but was getting cut-off from phone calls. I used F00 to check the button, and the display said only "R". I re-programmed the button to F17 on the spot, and all was well.

Checking the Remote Administration tool, the button was labeled "R", though it didn't seem to correspond to any of the choices available from the available menu.

So, what is "R", and how does a button get programmed to "R"?

"R" is a recall (flash) inbedded in a speed dial string. It is entered by pressing Speaker. So someone had gone into programming at the extension, pressed the Caller ID Inspect button, and pressed speaker before exiting the program mode.

We use it for programming one touch Centrex transfer buttons. Recall (Flash), Pause, Centrex number is programmed Speaker, Hold, Telephone Number. Press it while on a call, and you automatically get the flash, pause, and number all together.
