What is "Call Appearance"?

Sorry for the ** NEBIE ** status.

I am attempting to configure the Button Programming for a 4620 IP phone and not sure where to start. I am reading that the first button must be a call apperance button. OK But I don't know what this means.

Can anyone direct me to a little training on this subject??
