What is: PCL3,x4,x5

Anyone wanna explain to me exactly what those are?

I've never really payed much attention to it, but now I kinda wanna know..

I can't explain it because I don't know either. Curiosity-google searches-quickly obtained the following as very basic starting points for further education.
Google searches on things like pcl3 pcl4 pcl5 pcl5e produce pages and pages of hits which i do not have the time right now to wade through carefully.

Some comments about a 3 party program relating to HP pcl 3 printers-the main thing I take away from this is that PCL 3 relates to inkjet/deskjet in some way.
