We currently are running a BCM400 in our office and I have been thinking of upgrading to VOIP ofr some time now. What extra bits of hardware will I need to install VOIP for the BCM?

The system will be replacing around 40-50 digital phones, also, I already have power over ethernet switches in place ready.

Are youjust trying to replace the phones or do you want to go with a VoIP provider for your trunks as well?

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

At the moment, just the phones, but in the near future, I will want to enable site to site calling using our internal extensions if thats possible. Each site currently has a BCM400

To answer the question....Keycodes, good data network back bone and a computer. OF course teh normal IP addresses etc.

I personally would add the IP trunks between the sites first and get the increased functionality it provides, before replacing all the phones. You don't gain any functionality (in my opinion you lose some) by switching to IP phones.

I agree 100% with bluemr2

You don't need to replace all your Digital phone's to use VOIP between sites, all you need are VOIP Licences and send the calls over your Data network. Alot cheaper and more reliable.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

sounds interesting, all of our BCM's are currently netwroked but not from site to site, i'm guessing I would need to trunk the sites together, what key codes would i need?

What do you mean by Networked but not from site to site?

Is there a Data connection to all sites? if yes, then all you need is VOIP Licences as they are already connected to each other though the Data network.

we have 4 sites, 1 main site which is connected to the other sites via a leased line. the BCM's are on the LAN but not trunked so cannot see eachother. Also each site has a completely different IP range, which im guessing deosn't help things either. the VOIP licenses, do I need one for every handset?

No you only need as many as you think you will have call going at the same time.

Are BCM's connected to the LAN and can you login to them Via the LAN?

You will need "IP Telephony Client" licenses per IP phone. This just allows the IP phone to work with the BCM.

IP Trunk licenses for each concurrent call on an IP Trunk, regardless of the call being to/from an analog phone, digital set, or IP phone.

If you just want to add IP phones, but continue using the current leased lines, you will only need IP Telephony Client licenses.
