What is meant by 'Embedded' software? 1

I'm a programmer in Visual Basic, C/C++, PERL, and others. But in this industry which is overinundated with acronyms and terms, I have never gotten a clear definition regarding what is meant by 'Embedded' software. Is it simply an application or functionality contained (embedded) within another larger application? Thanks for the clarification.

I could certainly be wrong, but it was my impression it was software embedded into non-computers--"smart" appliances, for instance. Rick Sprague

Embedded applications are those which are burned into EEPROMs. Think "firmware".

Uses range from microwave ovens to network routers, to automobile ECUs.
