What is is called when you end a domain with a folder name.

I could look up the information and do this myself, but I'm not sure what its called

Example

SITENAME is: ....

http://www.mysite.com

I want to have a name/link of

http://www.mysite.com/materials

Where I could put various materials for an event, without having to give a link with a page ending in .htm.

What is that called? I don't thinks its a subdoman, because a subdomain would be

http://www.materials.mysite.com

... right?

It is just a location.

or even

http://www.mysite.com/materials

is the same as the default document at

http://www.mysite.com/materials/index.html

Whether the end of the address ends in .php, .html, or .pickles is dependent on how the server is configured to handle documents.
