What is Flash/Director

Hi all!

I'm a C++ / Delphi pogrammer by trade. On other websites I've heard about Flash, and Director, and I've heard many programmers talk about designing websites to programming video-games with the package.

So my basic question is: What is Flash to a programmer?
Is it Macromedia's version of C++ or java? or is it BASIC?
Is it a new breed of programming language?
Is it pascal? or ADA?
Is it a website designer?
Is it a game creation system?
Is it a webpage system?
Is it a HTML/XML/ASP system?
Is it a language developed to control movie/sound files?

If it is similiar to a product that already exists, what are the benefits of crossing over to Flash. How difficult is it to build projects using the product?

If your a programmer you should be able to pick up the action scripting quite easily..Buy the program follow the tutorials, and let your imagination run wild..
