I just wanted to know what is DVD-R and DVD+R? What is the diffenrence between them and also what is DVD-RAM?

Please reply to my queries.

Thanx a lot,
Santosh....

The DVD-R media formats are officially approved by the standards group DVD Forum. The DVD Forum was founded by Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner, so it has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

DVD+R formats are not approved by the DVD Forum standards group, but are instead supported by the DVD+RW Alliance. The DVD+RW Alliance is supported by Sony, Yamaha, Philips, Dell, and JP, so it also has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

The main functional differences between DVD-R and DVD+R are:
1) the DVD recorder's built-in defects management
2) the way the records format and rewrite DVDs
3) the price

CzarJ,
Hmm. I'm not sure I would agree that one major difference between the two are price. Both are pretty close in terms of both the drive and media. Also don't forget to mention that Pioneer was the company who did the most in bringing DVD-R/RW to the map.

Santosh,
This site should have some answers:

Because drives that can use both formats (+ and -) are widely available, the difference between the two isn't as important anymore. It would be best to invest in a combo drive. As for DVD-RAM, it's more for storage and transport in the PC world and isn't as compatible on older DVD-ROM drives.
