A sign in a laundry shop nearby (its functions include dry cleaning and laundry services, as well as providing coin-operated washers and dryers for self-service):
Code:
[sup][center]PLEASE[/center][/sup]
[center]NO SMOKING[/center]
[center]NO EATING OR DRINKING[/center]
[center]NO LINT SCREEN CLEANING[/center]
[center]THIS IS DONE BY MANAGEMENT[/center]
Do you think management is allowed to smoke there?

I would not thing that it would be a particularly good idea for a laundry and dry cleaning establishment to allow anyone to smoke on the premises.

Skip,
I think I was not clear enough.

I was trying to ask what's your impression from reading that sign (even though you are probably right about it not being a good idea, and I think smoking is not even legal in most public places around here).

Would you think that only lint screen cleaning is done by management (that's what they were trying to say), or that smoking, eating, and drinking as well?

It certainly is a bogus sign but it doesn't say:

"THESE ARE DONE BY MANAGEMENT" so it probably means that Management only acts on the last item "NO LINT SCREEN CLEANING".

I'd fire the sign maker!!

Because "This" is a singular pronoun, it refers only to it's immediate antecedent, which is lint cleaning.

That being said, it's a poorly written sign. It would have been far clearer to combine the last two lines as one
"NO LINT SCREEN CLEANING, THIS IS DONE BY MANAGEMENT"

Well, "THIS" could also be referring to the posting of the sign.

==> Well, "THIS" could also be referring to the posting of the sign.
Grammatically, that would be worse.

The virtually unequivocal wording would be:
Code:
[CENTER]PLEASE
NO LINT SCREEN CLEANING (MANAGEMENT CLEANS THE SCREENS)
NO SMOKING
NO EATING OR DRINKING[/CENTER]

I think the sign is there to prevent you from examining the lint screens, because you could perhaps reveal, that no lint screen cleaning is done by management.

Bye, Olaf.

or maybe they collect the lint, for nefarious purposes, such as:

[hide]Brain: We must prepare for tomorrow night.
Pinky: Why? What are we going to do tomorrow night?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky - try to take over the world![/hide]

or perhaps, they are trying to use it for a movie. Ah, no, there already is a film called "Lint the Movie" (spoiler: has nothing to do with lint)

I agree. I suspect that

THIS IS DONE BY MANAGEMENT

Should have read something like

By Order of the Management

Here are my assumption about the said sign:

Management displaying an excellent prowess of the English language.(Not)

Perhaps the person who "made" the sign was upset at the repeat offending and used Management in vain.

Perhaps there is no Management and it is a construct of someone with the same beef as mentioned above.

To answer some of the questions, the establishment is run by an immigrant owner, with the help of his minor son and an immigrant employee with her minor kid - no other 'management' exists to my knowledge. (I would suspect that they might have ordered the sign from another small business run by an immigrant.)

And I tend to agree with Olaf that "the sign is there to prevent you from examining the lint screens, because you could perhaps reveal, that no lint screen cleaning is done by management", or at least not as often as they should have - but I always chuckle when I see it.

The real reason that people don't want their dryer lint removed...it wastes an important un-natural resource for artists.

'Lint screen cleaning by Management only' would cover it (and Management (in lint) too no doubt!).

The internet - allowing those who don't know what they're talking about to have their say.

The simple No ... statements are all that is needed on the sign.
Do the customers need to know how the link screens are cleaned? I think not, they only need to know they are not allowed to do it!

True, but not the whole story. It could refer equally well to the collection (also singular) of activites which preceded it.

Wow Santa - Too bad Christmas has already passed. At least one of those would have been on my wish list had I known. :)
