What is default system font?

I feel silly asking such a basic question.

If a web browser can not display a text font that is called out, I assume it defaults to the system font, is that correct?

In doing so, what font is the system font?

Usually
Times, Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica.

To expand on that a little, if you specify a serif font and the users machines does not have it, then it will default to the next nearest (or most common) serif font they have. Same with the sans serif fonts (this will almost certainly be Arial. roda B-)
