Cisco recently released three new Associate level certifications. Wireless, Voice and Security. You must first take the CCNA Routing and Switching which is the regular CCNA. Then you may take the rest. These certs will renew your CCNA. Any professional level exam will also renew these certifications.
These certs demonstrate an associate level of proficiency in these specific areas. It may prove a good idea to tackle all four of these certifications prior to beginning a professional level cert as they do indeed reset the associate level certs but not the professional level. Furthermore, these certs are prerequisites for the professional level certifications. IE. You must now take the CCNA Voice prior to attempting the CCVP... The same goes for CCNA Security and CCSP.
Slight addendum... I should state that you CAN take/attempt any exam/cert that you wish to but even if you pass you will not be awarded that certification unless you have met all prerequisites...
