I have a large Access 2000 database that is used by about 7 folks full time during business hours. Needless to say, any data loss or corruption would be a mess. The database is on a file server that gets daily backups, but I'm not sure that is enough. What is the best way to back up an Access database? What is the best way to compress it? We seem to loose performance if we don't compress it every 10 days or so. We can afford to buy a third party tool, but I'd like to know that one really works well (and better than just a scheduled script or something like that) before spending money.

Access 2000
From the Help file:

/compact target database or target Access project

Compacts and repairs the Access database, or compacts the Access project that was specified before the /compact option, and then closes Microsoft Access. If you omit a target file name following the /compact option, the file is compacted to the original name and folder. To compact to a different name, specify a target file. If you don't include a path in target database or target Access project, the target file is created in your My Documents folder by default.
In an Access project, this option compacts the Access project (.adp) file but not the Microsoft SQL Server database.

First I would create an Icon on your desktop and see if it works / or debug it until it does.
Then you could put it in a batch file .BAT and run it from the scheduler program in '98 or NT.

Also if you did not make an .MDE you should.

If you have a 'large' database, you will definitely notice a drop off in performance if you only compact once every 10 days. We have a 60 meg back end database here that slows down considerably after about 2-3 days if we don't compact it. I created my own Access utility database that backs up a database, compacts it, and then backs it up again. It does this on a timer so I can run it each night. If your database is very large, I would definitely try to find a some sort of system to compact the database each night.
