If someone has a small home network on DSL or Cable and running a router, what is the best setup to combat any type of hacking. Is the router enough with it's natural firewall or should a software firewall be added? The OSs are 98 and Win XP Pro. What would you say is the best defense. Should the XP firewall be activated or is this just a paper defense?

Hi There,

In Regards to hardware firewalls they certainly are worth turning on.

Good ones are the netgear 4 port dsl router/switches.

They have features that stops ICMP (ping) traffic to the WAN (internet) side of the network so it makes it harder for hackers to actively find you.

The best setup is an ADSL router, then a netgear dsl router with firewall enabled and then any pcs behind it with preferable Norton Antivirus on (doesn't have to be norton, just my preference) and also run something like Lavasoft Adaware every now and then to get rid of any spyware.

Hope this helps
