what would be the plus side to, for example, programmaticaly defining a text box versus using the properties box to define it?

well, i guess it's the size of the file, just like programmed animation instead of tweens.
but that's just what i think, i have not too much experience with programmed textboxes. regards

hmm...maybe that's it. does it dramatically reduce file sizes?

the only time i would dynamically create textboxes would be for a situation where i wanted to create them on the fly to respond to some user interaction.

yeah I agree... I think some of us get caught up in using AS when "hard coding" at authoring time is a better solution....
