I'm not a DSL expert, but I would assume that a DSL modem interfaces similarly to the way an analog one works. If that is so, an init string is a series of codes the modem driver sends to the modem configure it for a given connection. The .inf files that are sent with modems are acutally listings of the different codes tht are needed to perform common functions for tht model modem. Under Windows you can't see an analog modem's iunit string since it was supplied by the driver, however, in modem configuration, you can add extra codes to the init string to help specific problems.
