The monopoly of Microsoft is challenged.
Microsoft have dominated PC computing for decades. This is despite them writing operating systems that are less than stable.
In an ideal world Linux would be the challenger, yet try as I might I cannot see this happening. The reasoning is twofold; the dominance of Microsoft Office in applications and fear over the complexity of Linux. The former is real, despite the emergence of Staroffice as a competition, the training and experience invested in MS Office will limit it's inroads into the business world. A shame but true. The latter is mostly illusory. Linux is easier to install, secure and support than Windows (try telnetting to a Windows box and seeing what processes are running!!!) but it is a concern. I hope I am wrong.
What I would like to see is Apple porting OS-X to the intel/AMD platform. I have been more than impressed with this OS. It is easier to use and learn than windows, it has a version of MS Office that is imho better than the XP version (although it lacks MS Access), is less susceptible to hacking and I never get support calls for it. If priced to undercut Windows it would give MS a run for it's money.
