The monopoly of Microsoft is challenged.

Microsoft have dominated PC computing for decades. This is despite them writing operating systems that are less than stable.

In an ideal world Linux would be the challenger, yet try as I might I cannot see this happening. The reasoning is twofold; the dominance of Microsoft Office in applications and fear over the complexity of Linux. The former is real, despite the emergence of Staroffice as a competition, the training and experience invested in MS Office will limit it's inroads into the business world. A shame but true. The latter is mostly illusory. Linux is easier to install, secure and support than Windows (try telnetting to a Windows box and seeing what processes are running!!!) but it is a concern. I hope I am wrong.

What I would like to see is Apple porting OS-X to the intel/AMD platform. I have been more than impressed with this OS. It is easier to use and learn than windows, it has a version of MS Office that is imho better than the XP version (although it lacks MS Access), is less susceptible to hacking and I never get support calls for it. If priced to undercut Windows it would give MS a run for it's money.

i seriously doubt that steve jobs will ever release the mac os to run on intel machines. remember, he was the one that killed off the mac clones.

on the other hand, sun could make some serious inroads in the business app market if they could get a clue on marketing. star office is a great product (i use the open office version), but all it needs is some marketing muscle.

I don't remember where I read it but it was a mentino a few weeks ago about a small team at Apple that already is keeping an X86 port of OS-X up to speed with the released Mac versino. No plans to release it though.

yeah, i had heard of that too. and i believe that, in theory, os x should run on ibm's powerpc chip, but i can't verify that.

um TimRegester, just an fyi, I was talking to my MS team and you can telnet to an NT/2K server and see what processes are running. It's a command line tool included in the resource kit.

I know it's possibly to telnet into win2k/nt, but I just can't see it being as easy as loggin in through telnet and typing:
ps -aux|grep <script name>
to see if <script name> is running.

Anyone able to give the command(s) needed from the terminal to check if MSSQL or IIS is running?
