Hi all,

I am drawing up the spec for a new SQL 2000 development.

I was wondering of there is a good site for assessing the hardware requirements that would be best suited to my needs.

Apart from the storage space I envisage ( min 25 GB) I am still wondering whether to go for Raid5 or Raid0. It will be a non transactional system, running large data pulls, data manipulation and preparation for Business Objects universe(s) - therefore I assume Raid0 could be my best bet.

The question then remains - what processor(s), and what other things I need to take into account.

Thanks

Since it is going to be a purely dev system, id go with alot of hard drive space with same as production has for raid. As for processor and ram, i would try to mirror production systems. After all if it does well on dev, but not in production strictly because of hardware, its really not that successful is it. I would also mirror prodution's network system. if your running giga cards in prod, i would have giga cards in dev. Ideally all your systems (dev, test, uat, and prod) are idential for hardware or improve as you go up. Ideally you have your dev as slowest, and improve as you get higher. that way when you develop things that are reasonabley fast on dev, they will get faster as you get closer to prod.

Thanks for the feedback

Hi,

I'm currently looking into other hardware and software requirements for SQL Server applications. To be access via the web also. Thinking of setting up DMZ as well as secured network, coupled with the cluster Server, raid 5 setup for all of the Servers for the database synchronization.

Currently everyday, the SQL Server would hang. Hence, pls advise. The target audience is ard 40,000 users and would be increasing due to future demand. Synchronization are via handhelds, web, console workstations etc. Hence, I would like to design a good robust, scalable network design for them.

Can any one recommend any good sites?

Thanks,
libroos
