I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FX170, I have been getting the error "SMART failure predicted on Hard Disk 0" I know that this means my hard drive is going to die soon. What I want to know is what kind of Hard Drive could i get for the computer, as I have read the ones exactly like the one i have in the machine have been know to have some problems. on the "SMART failure predicted on Hard Disk 0" screen it tells me the name of the hard drive. its a Hitachi_DK23BA-20, other wise known as a 20 gig one. I found this description of it on the hitachi website and it says the interface is ATA-5 (Enhanced IDE) is there any other hard drive i could use with this laptop as opposed to the model it came with? If so, could you please explain in detail what i need to look for, and if you know of any deals please share them. Your replies are appreciated.

Old HDD was 2mb 20gig 4200rpm hitachi ATA66 or at least thats what I'm seeing, so a direct new replacement will be difficult (old technology)
This one should work just fine and give you some performance gains into the bargain.

My only reservation is how Sony supply the operating system/applications and drivers, are they full products on CDroms or is there a hidden partition containing a Ghost image? obviously if you have all the software and drivers seperately a clean install on this new disk should work just fine.
Always check with the vendor for compatibility first.

Thanks, that har drive looks like it shoul work. I also have another question. ATA-5, is that compatible with ATA-6 and ATA-7? Also moving on the point with the operation system. I have acctually lost the recovery CD, so im planning to buy windows XP to put on the machine, and im pretty sure all the drivers i need are on the sony support website.

Download the drivers first, lable and put them on a disk
As for your recovery disk, well as long as your Vaio has a valid XP License sticker then you shouldn't need to buy another copy, just borrow someone else's disk but use your number.
Although laptops aren't my particular area I'm pretty sure the ATA-5 just referes to the older ATA66 interface and just like desktops a faster ATA100 device (which I'm assuming is the ATA-6 or 7 reference) can be used as direct replacement.
This newer drive also has a faster 5,400rpm spin speed so gains all round.
As I said, just confirm when ordering to be sure.
