We recently implemented a Mirrored RAID setup in our server here at my office, and I've been wondering, how will I know if sectors start going bad on one of the drives? Let's say that one of the hard drives starts dying... will I even know anything until the same spot on the other drive dies?

Is all a mirrored RAID setup does is buy you time in case of a hard disk failure? I mean, what are your options if a disk starts going bad?

Thanks
Ian

Doubt that the same spot on both hard drives would go bad...that's more on an individual basis.
Depending on WHICH drive and which controller you have, you should get diagnostics warnings from them before they absolutely fail.
Have SMART enabled?
If a disc goes bad, the remaining one may be used to rebuild the mirror (after replacing the drive).
There was no documentation with the setup?

Is it hardware RAID or software RAID?

If it is hardware and you don't have it setup for notification, you won't know. A+,N+,S+,L+,I+,HTI+,CET,CST,CNST,CFOT,CCNT,ACSP,ISA CCST3

It is a hardware RAID. I'm not sure if it is set up for notification or not. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks
Ian
