I want to execute a script everytime a user logs out. I don't want it to execute every time the shell is closed so the .bash_logout and its kind are not suitable
Platforms,

redhat 5.2,6.0 and Irix 5.3, 6.5
P6's and SGI INDIGO 2's
AfterStep GUI

Is there a global .logout file somewhere that I can call my script from?
hmm... not sure on the .logout file; but I might be able to help you a little.....Linux *always* (regardless of any version I've used) switches to runlevel 6 before shutting down......maybe you could trigger a file to be run by that switch.
When you say logout, presumably you're talking about when the user logs out of AfterStep? If so, then you could probably put something into the user's .xinitrc or .xsession to call the required script when AfterStep finishes. (Use .xsession if the users are logging in from xdm, and .xinitrc if they're using 'startx'.)

Normally there's a line like "exec afterstep". Get rid of the exec and add the call to your script on the next line.

Once again, I'm nowhere near my Linux box, so I've not been able to try this.

Hope this helps.
