What graphics can be imported and what are they saved as

Just about any format you like can be imported - gif, jpeg, png, photoshop psd, illustrator ai, tiff -you name it (look under the import dialog, ctrl-R, there's a long list of formats).
As to what they're saved as in Flash, no idea. I'd imagine it's proprietary but the player and .swf format SDKs are open source so if you're really curious you can download them and find out.
